Release People, Places and Things Paintings by Antonio Grimaldi and sculptures by Kt Carney will be exhibited from October 1 through October 31, 2004, at Highwire Gallery, 1315 Cherry St., 4th Floor, Philadelphia, PA, 19107. A wine and cheese reception will be held on Friday, October 1, 6-11 PM, with music provided by cellist Monica McIntyre from 7-9. Working predominately in steel, Kt Carney has been creating miniature and large-scale gestural sculptures. Preoccupied (some say obsessed) with reading the local Burlington County Times obituaries, Kt “finds” people whose obituary captured a unique aspect of the deceased. With nothing but the information provided, including name, age, dates of birth and death, and perhaps a single line indicating the deceased person’s occupation or hobby, Kt first sketches the figure in ink. Next a maquette in wire is created, and finally, the full human scaled figure in welded steel. The figures emphasize the universal elements of their daily existence, illuminating some passionate activity, elevating them from the ordinary to the iconographic. Without boundaries are Antonio Grimaldi’s elegant landscapes. They are spiritually elemental gestures idealizing a state of flux in nature such as moist haziness, wind sounds, a quiet heaviness of dusk, or the silent clarity after a storm, events relived during his long retreats in the rolling hills of southern Italy. To do this Grimaldi visually records moments with sketches and recreates them in his studio. He works mainly on paper and canvas using a mixed media technique with sand, acrylic paint and oil pastel. Through his use of color or texture he makes a tension which forms a curiously alive but meditative space. In the front gallery, Women Against Abuse, in collaboration with several other domestic violence and anti-violence organizations in Philadelphia, will have an exhibit entitled The Truth Behind the Silence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the exhibit expresses the desire to grieve the loss and celebrate the lives of those who have been killed as a result of domestic violence. The exhibit will include a table, separated into sections for each victim, with family members setting each place with items specific to their loved ones. There will be artwork by children and other installations as well. A brief speech will be given between 6:30 and 7.
