Peter Kinney shows a large number (over 40) of new pieces that have been done within the last two years, plus a few pieces from earlier times. Kinney’s recent work continues to focus on the raw material of earth that he has discovered and collected himself. However, there is more emphasis on the light and color of the sun acting on the earth in this exhibit.

Inspired by yet another trip to the canyon lands of Utah and Colorado, Kinney’s work ranges in scale from 8 x 5 feet through medium size to miniatures. The scale shifts keep up with Kinney’s many moods, and the moods of the earth, while traveling in the deserts and mountains of the Southwest, or working in his back yard as thunderstorms approach, or as light on his paper shifts from sunlight to shadow.

There is also work done alongside his students at the Haverford School, exploring the qualities of Haverford Pond, or playing with earth and sand that they have gathered on their trips and given to him.

Peter “Doc” Kinney dedicates
this exhibit
to his students past and present,
who have given him so much good feedback and inspiration for his work over the years. As one small way of honoring my students I include in this exhibit a selection of work done by Upper School students at Haverford with whom I have worked this year and last. Also, I include work done by Lower School students at Westtown School this spring, having been invited to do a workshop there by a former Haverford teacher, Jeff Waring.

I believe that play is a crucial dimension of the art making process. And students know how to play. This leads to the works in this show that come from my dreaming mind, whose references are not a particular locale, but something discovered and invented, such at Rashi, an important work in this exhibit. Both types of work --the imaginative and the interpretive-- are important for me.

In addition, I have invited Haverford students who are accomplished musicians to play at a special reception for student artists and musicians on May 21, Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 pm
