May, 2006 Exhibit Tyler School of Art BFA Exhibit Showing May
5-16, 2006: Opening Reception: May 5, 6-9 PM Showing May 19-28, 2006: Opening Reception: May 19, 6-9 PM Tyler School of Art’s department of Photography proudly presents its BFA exhibition of the class 2006. This small group of women brought their technical learning and artistic abilities together to put out their final show, presenting themselves as young photographers embarking on their next step as professionals. The exhibition represents a wide range of talent, theory, and style from classical prints to installation.
Rachael Friedman, now pursuing a BFA in photography at Tyler School of art at Temple University has been photographing for six years. Rachael’s images almost always include people. “It’s practically essential, because humans, after all, are what the work is all about.” In past cases, she’s commented on America’s obsession with image, attacking fad diets for example, with an outrageous interpretation of how the fixation can manipulate lives. In her most recent series, Taking Sides, she explores controversial issues that foster critical thinking and encourage the development of concern for serious political, social and cultural dichotomies Amanda Jaffe is a senior from Tyler School of Art. In her four years she has been mainly photographing people and reactions except for a brief landscape period in Italy and Scotland. After she graduates, she plans on driving across the country for a month or two and photographing it. She has no immediate plans in terms of long term employment and is perfectly content with that. With influences as renown as Ralph Eugene Meatyard and Walker Evans, Carina shoots portraits in a very un-conventional way. Through the blank expressions of her models, she references traditional daguerreotypes, yet presents them, often times, in a surreal environment. Although Carina mostly shoots portraits in staged set-ups, she searches to be inspired by life experiences and interprets them through her photographs.
A current resident in Elkins Park, Martha Wright is a photographer who explores the technical aspects of fine art photography and the interaction of her photographs with the viewer. Taking a more unconventional approach, she has been taking landscapes from highways with a holga camera and plans to create her installation of these photographs in a nostalgic representation of someone’s home. She has further interests in curating and critical writings and plans on approaching more galleries in an unconventional context: to discover a separate idea from the classical mindset of today’s art presentation.
Andrea Lease graduated from Temple University Tyler School of Art with a BFA in photography. Much of her work is influenced by Bauhaus and minimalism. Conceptually her work is inspired by events from her own life and historical events that were shaped by social disorder. A great deal of her work involves a large amount of experimentation with non-silver processes. Other interests outside of photography include illustration, design, and painting.
I believe that beauty is all around us. I see it everywhere, especially in nature. Photography helps me to better express my ideas and to show the world what I see. I find my inspiration through nature and its beauty; I use that as the basis of my work.
My name is Stephany Townsend. As a senior at Tyler School of Art, I am quite excited about the future. In December I will receive my Bachelor of Fine Art with a major in Photography as well as an Art Education Certification. I hope to be an ambassador of the arts for future generations, while pursuing my own art as well. If you feel like you are seeking harmony, come see my show. The opening reception will be held May 19th 2006 from 6-9 pm.
