I found the orange shell on a beach in Sanibel Island, Florida, and for this painting I shot a digital close-up of it on a chess board. The photo was printed and cut into 1-inch squares, then collaged in a checkerboard-like pattern onto a painted canvas board. The entire surface was then painted over so that hardly any of the original photo is still visible.
