Ken B. Miller and Lisa Spera join forces to examine the theme of “Assembly” at the new location of the Highwire Gallery.

Miller’s collage paintings provide assembled scenes and assembled backgrounds, produced from photographs and collaged pieces of paper. Blocks of foreign language text, found images and pieces of maps add tension, texture and depth to seemingly simple landscape and still life scenes. Pieces of photographs are added for slices of concrete realism, and layers of transparent acrylic paint are layered over the pieces, giving them a smooth, consistent look.

Spera’s photographs portray assemblies of people watching things. In these photos, bystanders rather than participants become the event itself , exploring the relationship between viewers and actions. One set of photos shows the audience, and the other set shows what is being viewed.
